D.O. Aceite del Bajo Aragón Regulatory Council (04/04/2006)
Last Saturday, March 25th, was the closing day of this year’s Fiesta de la Almazara (Olive-Oil Mill Fiesta) held organised on the 23rd , 24th and 25th by the Designation of Origin “Aceite del Bajo Aragón” Regulatory Council in collaboration with different processing companies from the area and Mella Town Hall.
The main day of the Fiesta de la Almazara was held to mark the end of the 2006 event, with activities taking place throughout the morning. From 9.30 a.m. a popular mid-morning snack was served in Maella with typical products from the area; it was offered by the local olive-oil mills in the Plaza de Zaragoza, opposite the municipal hall.
Following the snack, a tourist visit to the town took place, including the exhibitions relating to the world of olive oil. The central event of the Fiesta took place at 12.30 p.m.
Throughout this intense day, during which exhibitions were visited and lectures took place, the “Best Oil in Lower Aragon” ("Mejor Aceite del Bajo Aragón") prize was awarded. This prize is awarded in recognition of the most outstanding preparation of all those bottled under the quality seal of the Designation of Origin, courtesy of Pierelasi España S.L. The event was conducted by the journalist Miguel Mena and was attended by the President of the Regional Government of Aragon, Marcelino Iglesias.
Almazaras Reunidas del Bajo Aragón, which brings together four cooperatives from the towns of Alcorisa, Calaceite, La Cordeñera and Mazaleón was awarded the first prize for the "Best Oil in Lower Aragon". The second prize went to the Valjunquera Cooperative and the third prize to the Sociedad Cooperativa de Valdealgorfa.
Without a doubt, a perfect end to the seventh Fiesta de la Almazara, consolidating it as one of the most important events held in our community in which oil is the main character.
