D.O. “Aceite del Bajo Aragón” Regulatory Council (13/03/2006)
The Designation of Origin “Aceite del Bajo Aragón” Regulatory Council, together with Maella Town Hall and the olive-oil mills of Torremaella, Alcañiz-Millán, Magalla and Fruma are once again holding the Feria de la Almazara, which will be held this year on March 23rd, 24th and 25th next.
The fiesta will begin on Thursday, March 23rd at 7.00 p.m., with an initial activity involving a talk on extra virgin olive oil, in which three experts will address health, consumer and communications issues in depth. The talk will be given by María Ángeles Calvo, a bromatologist and an oil expert and tasting teacher; Juan Barbacil, gastronomy journalist; and Wenceslao Varona, Doctor in Medicine. When the talk is over, an afternoon snack will be given in the municipal hall.
The activities will continue on March 24th at 7.30 p.m. with a lecture on the "Olive groves: irrigated and dry land" given by José Luis Espada, Head of the Wood Crops Unit in the Department of Agriculture of the Regional Government of Aragon, in the Town Hall assembly hall. Following these events, refreshments with Spanish wine will be served.
To mark the end of the 2006 event, on March 25th the main day of the Fiesta de la Almazara will be held, with activities taking place throughout the morning. From 9.30 a.m. a popular mid-morning snack will be served in Maella with typical products from the area; it will be offered by the local olive-oil mills in the Plaza de Zaragoza, opposite the municipal hall.
Following the snack, a tourist visit to the town will take place, including the exhibitions relating to the world of olive oil. At 12.30 p.m. the central event of the fiesta will take place with the awarding of the prizes for the Best Oil in Lower Aragon (“Mejor Aceite del Bajo Aragón), courtesy of Pierelasi España S.L.; this event will be conducted by the journalist Miguel Mena. To wind up, a lunch bringing all the members of the oil-producing community together will be held in the municipal hall.
As well as the organization, Gruppo Pieralisi, Bajo Aragón-Caspe, Caja Inmaculada, Ibercaja, Santander Central Hispano, Cajalón, Zaragoza Provincial Council, Teruel Provincial Council, Caja Rural de Teruel and the Regional Government of Aragon will collaborate in the Fiesta de la Almazara.
